Using the Cash Drawer with Kayana EPOS

Last updated Jan 28, 2026

The cash drawer is used to securely store cash and automatically opens during cash payments when it is connected to the printer.

The cash drawer is used only for cash transactions, when customers choose to pay in cash.

In a standard Kayana EPOS setup:

  • The printer is connected to the EPOS
  • The cash drawer is connected to the printer

When Cash is selected as the payment method on the EPOS, the printer triggers the cash drawer to open automatically.

Before You Start: Check the Printer and Cash drawer Connection

Before processing cash payments, confirm that the printer is properly connected.

How to check

  • Look at the top-right corner of the EPOS screen
  • You should see a printer icon with a small green tick
  • Alternatively, you can also navigate to System & Connectivity from the EPOS home screen
  • Review connections on the System & Connectivity screen
  • The Open Cash Drawer button will be marked with a green tick when cash drawer is connected

This confirms that the printer — and therefore the cash drawer — is correctly connected.

Processing a Cash Payment

Follow the steps below when a customer pays in cash (for takeaway, dine-in, or collection orders).

  1. Build the order on the EPOS
  2. Select Proceed to Pay
  3. Choose Cash as the payment method
  4. Enter the cash amount received
  5. Tap Enter
  6. Tap Confirm

What Happens Next

Once Confirm is selected:

  • A cash receipt is printed from the printer
  • At the same time, the cash drawer automatically opens

This allows the staff member to:

  • Place the cash received into the drawer
  • Provide change to the customer if required

Next Steps

To ensure accurate cash tracking and end-of-day reporting, set your opening cash float before taking cash payments. Follow How to Manage Cash Float in Kayana EPOS to enter the starting cash amount for your till.
