The challenge

Carrying a separate reader is one more thing to charge, lose and pay for — especially for mobile and pop-up trade.

Runs onWeb, iOS & Android

Tap to pay turns a phone into a card reader — accept contactless payments directly on your phone or a Kayana device, with no separate reader and nothing extra to buy to get started.

How tap to pay works on iPhone

On iPhone, Tap to Pay uses Apple's built-in NFC chip, so a customer taps their card or phone against the back of the iPhone and the payment completes in seconds, with no case or dongle attached.

How tap to pay works on Android

On Android, the same idea runs on Google's version of the technology, working on supported handsets — tap a card or phone, payment confirms, receipt sent. The underlying tech differs from Apple's, but the result for the customer looks identical either way.

Is paying by phone secure?

It's secure by design: card details never touch the merchant's device, every transaction is encrypted, and it meets the same standards as a SoftPOS app or a dedicated card terminal. There's no card data stored on the phone itself.

Tap to pay vs traditional card terminals

Compared with a traditional card terminal, this needs no extra hardware and costs nothing extra to start, though a dedicated terminal still suits very high-volume counters better. Most businesses run both — a terminal on the counter, tap to pay on the move, reporting into the same EPOS system.
